Spectroscopic Centre of Excellence
Gary Hessman BSc

Graduated with a BSc. in Chemical Sciences from DIT in 2006, receiving the Royal Society of Chemistry Prize for best project.

Currently undertaking a PhD entitled “Metallo Cyclodextrin Derivatives in Anti Cancer Research” under the supervision of Dr Mary McNamara.

Project Overview

The project involves the synthesis of a range of amino derivatized cyclodextrins (CDs) and their characterisation using NMR, IR and Raman spectroscopy. These CDs are then coordinated to a metal centre and their use as chiral selectors is investigated using UV/Vis spectroscopy and circular dichroism. The most effective metallo-CDs are then used as mobile phase additives for the separation of chiral materials using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Capillary Electrophoresis (CE).
